13 Tools to Enhance Your Learning Experience

Hundreds of available (and free) online resources and tools can help you enhance your learning experience. We’ve listed some of the best tools to help you be even more successful in your present courses and in your overall educational journey. These tools will prove useful as you create citations, calculate results, brainstorm topics, plan your future, and apply to university. Check them out below:

1. EasyBib

EasyBib is a user-friendly online service that creates citations for students. This is a great starting point when creating citations, but be sure to check the recent style guides for accuracy. We at VHS provide citation guides in our courses, and we encourage you to use them. Additionally, this style chart by the Purdue Online Writing Lab is a resource that is routinely used in secondary school courses and in universities and colleges. logo

2. OneWord

OneWord is an effective, appealing warm-up website for writers that gives writers one word and 60 seconds in which to write about that concept. 3. Bubbl.us

Bubbl.us is a brainstorming tool that can be used for any type of project. If you’re having difficulty getting started on an idea, creating a brainstorming bubble can help you take those often difficult first steps. logoBig

4. Diigo

Diigo, online highlighting tool, adds a button to your browser that allows you to highlight and annotate any website you are reading. All of the links are stored in a library so you can easily access them later. This is an excellent active reading option for online articles. Untitled

5. SMRT English YouTube

The SMRT English YouTube channel teaches grammar concepts. This is especially useful, not only for English Language Learners, but also for any student who is trying to learn a particular grammar concept to improve writing. Examples include a video on essay structure and another on run-on sentences. logohd

6. TED-Ed YouTube

The TED-Ed YouTube has awesome videos on concepts from every discipline and at various levels. TED videos are always engaging, short, and informative. photo

7. eInfo

eInfo is a high school student’s guide to Ontario’s universities . Here you may browse programs, requirements, and more. logo-einfo-2x

8. Career Cruising

Career Cruising, a site that contains self-exploration and planning software, helps people build their futures. Students complete self-assessments, explore careers, plan their post-secondary education, search for work, and develop a portfolio. 9. Desmos Online Graphing Calculator

10. IXL Learning

IXL Learning is a fantastic place where students can practice math and further develop their skills. square-og-icon

11. White Boards

12. Binder

Binder is an app developed by D2L that allows users to store notes, bookmark pages, and more. Binder is one of the tools provided within our courses. While going through content in VHS courses, note the “Add to Binder” option which allows users to save and mark up course notes or other files they may wish to store. Untitled1

13. Microsoft Office Online

Microsoft Office Online allows users access to a web-based version of the Microsoft suite. The helpful tool is is free unlike the online version. The following apps are available through Microsoft Office Online:
